SIBU: The Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) of Raymond Sebastian longhouse at Passai here heaved a sigh of relief as its meeting room cum store’s building had been repaired and upgraded.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Community Development Team leader Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie said the project costing RM50,000 is under Rural Transformation Project (RTP).

“During our last visit to the longhouse in May this year, the longhouse chief, Raymond did mention to me that the building needed repair.

“Previously, the building which was located outside the longhouse was in a deplorable condition. Every time it rained, things stored inside would get wet.

“So, they sought for our help, and we managed to get RM50,000 in RTP fund to repair and upgrade the building. Now, the upgraded building, hopefully, can be used comfortably as a storeroom and a meeting room,” he said during his visit to the longhouse on Wednesday.

Lau also said the old structure was a bit slanted which caused safety issue.

Thus, a portion of the fund was used for structure repair and the rest of the fund was used to upgrade the condition of the store and to put a small meeting room for the JKKK.

He added that the implementing agency is Public Works Department.

The upgrading works started on Aug 29, 2024 and completed on Oct 28, 2024.

“We hope that through this upgraded building, they do not have to worry about the condition of the things they stored inside the storeroom and also provide better environment for the JKKK to have meeting.

“The place can also be utilised for a gathering venue for the JKKK members,” added Lau who is also Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman.
