KUCHING: The ‘Be A Hero – Blood Drive and Charity Fest’ turned SJK Chung Hua No. 5 into a lively centre of compassion as the local community came together, not just to talk about change but to walk the talk.
A total of 60 blood donors helped replenish the Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank, which requires an average of 80 pints of blood daily to serve patients facing emergencies, surgeries and other chronic conditions.
Organised by Big Grain Group in collaboration with the Malaysian Red Crescent (Stampin Chapter) and Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank, the event is part of an ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that puts forward health, charity and community engagement.
Chairman of the Management Committee for SJK Chung Hua No. 1-6 Kuching, Datuk Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, who also participated as a donor, said the event went beyond blood collection.

It also nurtures empathy and action among the younger generation and the broader community.
“After Ramadan and Hari Raya, the need to restock the blood supply becomes urgent.
“Donating blood is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to save a life and possibly a family’s future,” he said.
“But more than that, events like this proved we’re not just preaching kindness.
“We walk the talk. We show students and the community that real impact comes from doing, not just saying,” he added.
In addition to blood donations, the public contributed basic food items, diapers, milk powder, used clothing and recyclable materials such as old newspapers and electronics.

These were channelled to local charity organisations including Hope Place Kuching, S.O.S Kids Kuching, and a school-based IoT project supporting underprivileged families and critically ill children.
“Even supplement companies and pharmacies came forward to support these causes.
“It’s a sign that collaboration, when rooted in purpose, can truly change lives,” Jonathan said.
The event also featured free health screenings, from blood pressure and glucose checks to BMI, bone density, as well as dental evaluations, providing those who came to support with tools to better understand and manage their health.
Big Grain Group’s general manager, Clarence Chai, expressed his appreciation for the outpouring of support from all corners of the community.
“We’re incredibly touched by the turnout and the spirit shown by everyone involved.
“This wasn’t just about giving. It is about uniting for a cause, where each donor, volunteer and partner played a key role in making a difference,” he said.
With a strong sense of community in action, Big Grain Group reaffirmed its commitment to continue driving meaningful initiatives that support the local community.
