SERIAN: The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Sarawak is committed to ensuring food security, particularly in the fisheries sector.
Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Martin Ben said LKIM’s contract farming programme aims to ensure food security not only through marine fish catches but also aquaculture fish.
“I also hope that participants will make the best use of the knowledge and assistance provided to increase their income.”
Martin said this during the equipment handover ceremony to participants of the LKIM KPKM Marketing Service Programme (Contract Farming) 2024 at Kampung Mentu Tapu, here on Tuesday (Dec 10).
He added that his side will monitor the progress and development of the programme while hoping for more participation in contract farming programmes in the future.
Some 10 pond fish farmers participated in the KPKM marketing service programme, involving a total cost of RM76,900 covering training, marketing equipment assistance, and the construction of a new aquaculture produce collection centre at one of the participants’ homes in Kampung Mentu Tapu.
Seven ponds have been built under the Department of Agriculture Sarawak’s (Inland Fisheries Division) Commercial Aquaculture Project, focusing on farming red tilapia.
Also present was the director of LKIM Sarawak, Mohamad Rizal Sahari.
