BINTULU: Political parties have been reminded to refrain from independently raising funds for flood relief efforts here.

In making this call, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said this was to prevent public confusion, particularly at a time when scams are commonplace.

“Such actions may inadvertently encourage bad actors to exploit disaster relief efforts for fraudulent gain,” he said in a Facebook post after attending a special meeting of the Disaster Management Committee at the Resident’s Office here Saturday (Feb 1).

Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP therefore urged political parties to use their platforms to encourage donations through official channels rather than collecting funds independently or allocating portions of event funds to affected families.

“If the public wishes to contribute, political parties can provide clear donation channels or assist in channeling funds to the Disaster Management Committee for the Bintulu flood relief efforts.

“Meanwhile, members of the public who wish to donate are urged to be patient, as a donation account or channel will be announced as soon as possible,” he said.

Tiong also cautioned against political parties issuing receipts for donations to prevent misleading the public or allowing unscrupulous individuals to exploit the situation for personal gain.

“After all, such fundraising activities may encourage fraudulent actors to misuse the name of charity to amass funds, ultimately undermining the goodwill of sincere donors,” he said.

Bintulu, he said, has recently experienced an unprecedented flood, prompting many people to step forward and offer assistance.

“Political parties and politicians must recognise their true responsibilities — facilitating effective communication and coordination between government agencies, mobilising volunteers for aid distribution, and ensuring relief reaches those in need.

“However, at such a critical time, we must not create disorder or hinder relief efforts,” said Tiong.
