KUCHING: Good governance is more than just combating corruption; it’s about fostering a culture of learning and ethical work practices, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
He emphasised the crucial role of good governance and work ethics in the civil service.
“Governance isn’t merely about integrity. It demands proactivity and an understanding of the urgency of our work, rather than just clocking out at the end of the day,” he said when officiating at his ministry’s Good Governance and Integrity Day on Thursday (Dec 5).
Lee also encouraged senior officers to mentor junior staff by sharing experiences and providing training for the organisation’s growth.
“To achieve a high-income Sarawak, we must ensure high productivity and efficiency from our civil service,” he added.
He also highlighted the need for civil servants to understand the historical context of Malaysia’s formation in 1963, as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“It is crucial for civil servants to be well-versed in our history, federal and state constitutions, and the agreements that define our rights and autonomy,” he said.
On current projects, Lee noted the ministry’s initiatives in green energy and plans for a new international airport.
Citing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision, inspired by the Doha Airport, Lee urged his team to innovate and create a unique regional hub.
“We have the potential to create a regional international airport,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, Permanent Secretary Datuk Wong Hee Sieng, and MACC Sarawak State Investigation Chief Katherine Nais.
