KUCHING: Muslims celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha should learn from the previous Hari Gawai and Hari Raya Aidilfitri which saw a spike in Covid-19 cases due to failure to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
This was said by Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
“Muslims should comply with the SOPs set by the government as we are in Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) and should focus on moving to the next phase.
“We must learn from our earlier mistakes when some places and individuals failed to follow the SOPs, resulting in a rise in Covid-19 cases. But we hope to see a difference this time as a lot of us have been vaccinated.
“In order to move on to the next phase, we must all work conscientiously and remain vigilant, especially given the spread of the Covid-19 Delta variant, which is why we are aiming to attain herd immunity by the end of August as soon as possible,” she added.
Fatimah encouraged families and social event organisers to continue playing their roles during this Covid-19 pandemic by celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha virtually.
“We can celebrate online using social media applications such as WhatsApp, Skype, and Zoom in order to restrict movements as well as minimise the spread of Covid-19.”
“Although the essence of Hari Raya Aidiladha is to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrificing his son Ismail, we should also sacrifice by celebrating in the new norm.
“It is better to be cautious than regretful and with that, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Raya Aidiladha and to always follow the SOPs”
