LAWAS: The district has great potential to be the state’s next new economic frontier should investors decide to go ahead with their plans.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg today, several investors had shown keen interest to invest in the oil and gas sector here.

“If they go ahead with their intention, Lawas would certainly see a bright future,” he said at a ‘Townhall Session: Berambeh Ngan Abang Jo Ketua Menteri Sarawak’ organised at the Karnival Today for Tomorrow here today.

He said discussion on the prospects would be known sometime next month.

“We will discuss in detail with the investors for a win-win situation,” he added.

Lawas lies right between Bintulu and Brunei, both of which are active oil and gas producers.

On the future of the northern region, Abang Johari gave the assurance that it would be developed into the next economic frontier for the state.

“For now we focus on upgrading the fibre optic technology and also the construction of a RM150 million new airport, which will be funded by the state government after the federal government cancelled the project,” he added.
