KUCHING: It was a colourful and beautiful night where friends and families gathered and brought along lanterns during the Mid-Autumn Festival lantern walk at the Malaysia-China Friendship Park here on Sunday (Sept 5).

People were seen walking with the traditional Chinese lanterns as well as electrics one, all in different sizes, shapes and colours.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian and his wife, Datin Sri Enn Ong, also participated in the walk.

In his speech, Dr Sim said that he is glad to see everyone coming together for the occasion.

“As we know in Sarawak, the people here are very fortunate that we can celebrate all kinds of festivals, and hence we must continue to uphold this racial harmony among the different races and religions.

“Unlike in West Malaysia, there is political instability and some of them (people) are always divided,” he said.

Here in Sarawak, he said the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem had reminded state leaders to take good care of Sarawak.

“So, in Sarawak, people find the opportunity to celebrate unity and we can see friends and families coming for the lantern festival.

“And we should continue to teach our children good values and the spirit of being a Sarawakian and a tolerant society,” he said.

Meanwhile, SUPP Women chief and organising chairwoman Kho Teck Wan said this was the third time their party was organising the lantern walk since 2017.

“The reason why we continue to organise this event is that it is important that unity be inculcated and nurtured in our children when they are still young.”

Kho welcomed all to join as another lantern walk will be organised in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound on Sept 9.

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, or also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival will be held on Sept 10.

Among those present were Political Secretary to the Premier, Tan Kai and Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
