Laksa Sarawak gains recognition as unifying food

KUCHING: All 12 Laksa Sarawak premises participating in the Foodunites Ini Warisan Kita Programme Sarawak Edition organised by the National Unity Ministry have gained its Citarasa Menu Kami recognition.

The recognition initiated by the ministry aims to foster a sense of togetherness among the people of Malaysia through a more relaxed and heartfelt medium – diverse food offerings.

Minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, said the Sarawak Foodunites programme is a segment that involves the heritage food of Sarawak’s community, namely Laksa Sarawak.

“I understand that in this Foodunites Programme, 12 Laksa Sarawak stalls with their unique offerings have been gathered here.

“All these restaurant premises have gained the Citarasa Menu Kami recognition for successfully showcasing food or menu that bring moments of unity through the people’s food choices in Malaysia,”he said.

He said this during the launching of the Foodunites Ini Warisan Kita Programme Sarawak Edition here on Saturday (Feb 3).

Among the 12 premises which received the Citarasa Menu Kami recognition are King’s Laksa, Kafe Serambi, Big Prawn Noodle & Laksa, Sumiran Cafe, Dhie Laksa, The Table Ibu, Mom’s Laksa, Lala Laksa, Ain Little Kitchen, Mangkuk Bocor, Kak Nah Laksa Sarawak and Mee Kolok Sarawak.

Aaron said the programme that was launched in October 2023, is a new integration platform highlighted as one of the platforms to strengthen ‘inter’ and ‘intra’ ethnic social interactions in Malaysia, fostering a spirit of togetherness among Malaysians through food.

“I’d also like to announce that the Foodunites Programme will be implemented in 13 states and three federal territories to promote unity among Malaysians through a heritage food approach.

“The Ministry plans to conduct this programme in Melaka, featuring Melaka’s heritage menu, Asam Pedas,” he said.

Aaron said food plays an incredibly important role, not only as a source of energy for human survival but also holds its own history and nostalgia in shaping the civilisation of a nation.

“Malaysian cuisine currently serves as a communication vessel, catalysing the spread of culture and endeavoring to unite us all in a state of peace and harmony,” he said.

.Apart from Sarawak Laksa, there are six other traditional food featured in the Foodunites event held from Feb 3 to Feb 4 such as nasi lemak, kuey teow goreng, ayam pansuh, nasi bryani, kek lapis, and latok.
