KUCHING: The iconic Kuching White Cat statue has been dressed up for the upcoming Gawai festival.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council has been dressing up the statue in Padungan during most of the festivals in Sarawak to promote greater unity among the multi-ethnic society.

“Gawai is a very special occasion where it is not only celebrated by the Dayak but also other races and religious as festivals have always been a multiracial kind of thing in Sarawak,” he said after the lighting-up ceremony of the White Cat statue on Tuesday (May 23).

“Festivals or celebrations bring us together and allow us to foster closer ties. This also allows the multiracial society to understand each other better and strengthen harmony and unity in the state,” he said.

Wee said though he hoped the people can enjoy themselves during the celebration, it is crucial to stay vigilant against Covid-19, especially during events involving large crowds or when visiting houses of their friends and families.
