BARIO: Kuching will mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Semut with a re-enactment of the historic parachute landing at Padang Merdeka, on March 27, following a commemorative event here on Tuesday (March 25).
The initiative underscores the state’s recognition of the vital role played by the Z Special Unit in liberating Sarawak from Japanese occupation during World War II.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said Sarawak takes immense pride in honouring the sacrifices made by the operatives of Operation Semut.
“As Sarawakians, we are deeply grateful for the bravery of these soldiers, who fought for a land that was not their own. Because of their sacrifices, we are able to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today,” he said.
The commemoration saw the presence of foreign dignitaries, including High Commissioners from Australia and New Zealand, as well as the British Deputy High Commissioner.
The event also brought together war veterans, researchers and tourists, reflecting the growing international recognition of Operation Semut’s legacy.
“I am pleased to see the Bario Memorial Park becoming an important venue for visitors to pay their respects. This event not only honours those who served but also promotes historical tourism in Sarawak,” Abdul Karim added.
The upcoming re-enactment in Kuching, which will feature a recreation of the 1945 Z Special Unit parachute drop, is made possible through the support of the Australian High Commission and the Royal Malaysian Air Force, with additional participation from Jabatan Bomba Malaysia.
Since 2013, the annual commemoration of Operation Semut has evolved from a small gathering of former operatives and their families into an internationally recognised event.
Abdul Karim expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Rurum Kelabit Sarawak, the Miri Resident’s Office, and the Miri City Council in organising this year’s 80th anniversary celebrations.
“This is more than just a historical tribute — it is a reminder of the enduring friendships between Sarawak and our wartime allies. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Kuching for the re-enactment, ensuring that the legacy of Operation Semut continues to be remembered and honoured,” he said.
Also present at the event were Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), and Dato Dr Philip Raja, President of Rurum Kelabit Sarawak.
