KUCHING: Four international tennis events — the 1st World Tennis Tour M15 (Men Future Pro Circuit), ITF World Junior J1 36th Premier Sarawak Cup, ITF World Junior J3 37th Premier Sarawak Cup and 15th ATF U14 Asian Under 14 Series — will be held here this year.

Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah disclosed this at the handover of the project to upgrade SMK Tabuan Jaya’s tennis courts here.

He said the 1st World Tennis Tour M15 competition would be held from Aug 1-7, the ITF World Junior J1 from Oct 18-23, the ITF World Junior J3 from Oct 24-30 and the 15th ATF U14 from Nov 16-20.

All competitions will be held at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) courts in Jalan Budaya here.

On the upgrading of the tennis courts, Abdul Karim said it had always been the Sarawak government and SLTA’s mission to develop and groom future tennis stars.

“With that being said, the first collaboration between SLTA and SMK Tabuan Jaya started in 2013 with the identification of young talents, and eight students were recruited for the development programme.

“All the players have achieved success in the sport as well as in their respective careers.

“With this achievement, more are being recruited. Currently, there are more than 20 students in the programme.”
