KUCHING: The recent bombshell by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg about building a new Kuching International Airport has been the talk of the town.

As Sarawak aspires to become a developed state by 2030, the move by the state government to have a new, bigger, better and more modern airport infrastructure and facilities is a game changer to complement Sarawak’s economic development.

This new airport will accommodate tens of millions of passengers, all of which can have a multiplier effect on the state’s economy.

Abang Johari, who is also the Minister of Finance and New Economy, revealed that the new airport will be located in Kuching.

As this topic has been trending as a popular chat among the people, the New Sarawak Tribune went to the ground to get some opinions from the public about the upcoming new Kuching International Airport and what other facilities should be incorporated in this new iconic building.

“I think that having a second airport in Kuching is a good thing as it will benefit us a lot. If one airport experiences disruptions due to weather, maintenance, or other issues, the second airport can serve as a backup, ensuring continued air travel operations. A second airport can alleviate congestion by facilitating air traffic arrivals/ departures, managing passengers, and cargo. Some essential facilities at the new airport should include convenient rental options for travellers needing, first aid stations or medical clinics to handle medical emergencies.”

“The visionary plan to develop a new international airport in Kuching is a great initiative. I visualise a new airport that caters to peoples’ immediate demands while benefiting communities, the environment and economic growth. Although the world is moving towards rapid technological advancements that may not require the same amount of human assistance as it did before, I believe this plan will become the catalyst for Sarawak’s economic growth and environment whilst simultaneously creating more employment opportunities for the public, as well as contributing to the tourism sector. Generally speaking, I expect a sustainable airport with better infrastructure, modern facilities, superefficient and user-friendly systems. The location, however, should be somewhere accessible and strategic for everyone, including those from the outskirts of Kuching city.”

NUR SHAFIQAH ASYIKIN HAZUKKI, 26, Researcher

“The construction of a second airport in Kuching is a timely plan as Sarawak is now on track to power its economic growth. As we know, air transportation plays an important role in ensuring continuous inter-regional connectivity, in addition to increasing cargo shipments for the export of Sarawak-made products. When the construction of the second airport begins, I hope that the Sarawak government will consider the construction of a transit hotel, self-immigration service, access from the airport to the city centre via ART@MRT or bus shuttle.”

“For me, the idea is wonderful! It will considerably improve the travel experience of everyone. I expect top-notch amenities for the new Kuching airport, which include advanced security systems. These contemporary protections will ensure passengers safety. Apart from being new, it should efficiently handle the unexpected surge of more and larger aircrafts, paving the way for increased travel alternatives and connections.”

“In my opinion, I agree with Abang Jo in planning to build a new airport as the aviation industry is constantly growing. It can become one of the main attraction in Kuching for I believe the new airport will be more advance in its design and facilities. Personally, one facility that should be included in the new airport building is a comfortable chair for passengers while waiting for their flight. Some passenger need to wait for a long time at the airport due to flight delay. So, it is best for passenger to have a comfortable chair to rest. Second, a special kiosk of Sarawak products should be available so that travellers who are not from Sarawak can buy things as souvenirs. Third, a bigger, spacious, efficient parking bay is needed. This can help to avoid traffic jam around the airport main traffic flow and people who are waiting for someone will not block other people’s way.”

For me, I am happy with this proposal because it can generate more income, for the state as well as for the communities. Additionally, more foreign countries will recognise Kuching with the availability of the new international airport. My recommendation for a new international airport is to provide a larger prayer space that can accommodate male and female pilgrims who pray.
