KUCHING: Sarawak’s push towards sustainable tourism took a significant leap on Friday (Jan 17) with the announcement of a realigned Kuching Metro Electric Bus Route 103, aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time and bolstering the state’s eco-friendly public transport network, starting Feb 1.
Announcing the changes at a press conference, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah described the initiative as part of Sarawak’s broader commitment to promoting green mobility and eco-tourism.
“This adjustment leverages the strategic location of the Open Air Market as the starting point, replacing the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly building. The change not only makes connectivity more seamless for commuters but also supports local businesses in the area.”
Abdul Karim added that since its launch in March 2021, the Kuching Metro Electric Bus service has connected the city to major attractions such as the Semenggoh Orangutan Centre, offering free rides for locals and tourists.
With the new route, travel time will be reduced from two hours to 1.5 hours, while the daily frequency will increase from 12 to 16 trips.
The updated route is designed to enhance accessibility to landmarks like the Borneo Cultures Museum and Maritime Museum, ensuring greater convenience for visitors.
Abdul Karim also highlighted the service’s integration with the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system currently under construction at the Hikmah Exchange Station.
“These enhancements will allow for smoother transitions between the ART system and the Kuching Metro service, improving the overall travel experience for users.”
The realignment, he added, is expected to complement Sarawak’s goal of positioning itself as a premier eco-tourism destination.
He revealed that the state attracted 4.83 million visitors in 2024, surpassing its target by over 800,000, and generating RM12.45 billion in tourism receipts.
For 2025, Sarawak aims to attract 5 million visitors, which could contribute an estimated RM12.73 billion in tourism revenue.
“These targets reflect our confidence in Sarawak’s appeal as a sustainable and innovative tourism destination.”
Operated entirely by electric buses, the Kuching Metro service underscores Sarawak’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. Passengers can enjoy free rides equipped with onboard Wi-Fi and easy trip planning via Google Maps integration.
“This initiative is not just about transportation; it’s about creating a greener future and showcasing Sarawak as a forward-thinking, eco-friendly destination,” Abdul Karim added.
