KUCHING: The seventh edition of the Kuching Heritage Race (KHR) on May 10 will start from the iconic Fort Margherita and weave through surrounding kampungs and heritage landmarks.
This year’s theme, ‘Past, Present and All Together’, highlights the event’s central aim — to spark greater interest and appreciation for Kuching’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
Kuching Heritage Awareness Society president Phillip Yong said the first race was held in 2015, and each subsequent edition has explored different facets of Kuching’s heritage.
“KHR2025 is not a race in the traditional sense, although there is friendly competition.
“Teams of two to five participants solve clues to identify stations along the route. At each stop, they must complete engaging tasks — from traditional dances to local games and problem-solving activities. It’s a hands-on cultural experience,” he said.
More than just a heritage trail, the event also supports a good cause.
“By participating in KHR2025, you’re also giving back to the community. Funds raised are channeled to organisations that need your support most,” Yong added.
Organising chairperson Datin Dona Wee described the race as a truly memorable experience.
“We design the race to be packed with excitement, where every participant walks away with a renewed sense of discovery and positive energy,” she said.
Each year, the event pushes participants out of their comfort zones and into Kuching’s lesser-known corners.
The 2024 race, for instance, took place at the historic Batu Kawa old bazaar, a heritage enclave often overlooked as travellers zip past on the Pan-Borneo Highway. Situated along the Sarawak River, the bazaar is rich in character and hidden stories.
Meanwhile, the 2019 edition ‘Darul Hana Rediscovered’ guided participants through the riverside villages along the Sarawak River, offering an immersive experience into the heart of local community life.
Registration for KHR2025 is now open to teams of two to five participants. Interested teams can sign up at https://kuchingheritage.com/sign-up-for-the-race.
