KUCHING: City police have received 10 false police reports since January this year.

The victims claim in their reports that they are victims of robbery and snatch theft when the actual crime did not take place.

The latest fake police report was lodged yesterday (May 28) when a 21-year-old claimed that he was robbed by four men.

Acting Kuching OCPD Supt Merbin Lisa said the man’s report, lodged around 2.30 am, claimed that he had been tied up and brought to Serian by the alleged robbers.

In addition, the robbers also made off with the suspect’s motorcycle and valuables.

“Further investigation found that the man’s police report was false.

“Apparently, the man resorted to such action because he was afraid of being scolded by his family for using his father’s motorcycle,” he said.

All the false report cases are being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or up to six months in jail or both, upon conviction.

The public are strongly reminded not to make false police reports as this would give a negative impression that a crime has happened in Kuching district, when in fact, it actually did not happen at all.

Merbin stressed that the police will not hesitate to take strict actions against any individuals for making a false police report.
