KUCHING: Sarawak has set aside RM300 million for the construction of a deep-sea port on reclaimed land off Kuala Baram, to woo investments.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the port, designed with a depth of 12 metres, will cater to the needs of various industries in the northern part of Sarawak.
“We have approved about RM300 million for Miri to have a deep-sea port, to attract more investments,” he said during the Miri Malay Welfare Trust Board’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri dinner in Miri last night (Apr 15).
On efforts to boost the region’s power capacity, he said Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS is constructing a 500-MW power plant.
“Apart from strengthening the power capacity in Miri, the power generated from the plant will also be distributed to Limbang areas.
“With enough electricity, infrastructure development as well as the establishment of a deep-sea port, we are optimistic that Miri will have a promising future,” he said.
Abang Johari said the Sarawak government is also placing emphasis on human capital development and committed to providing free tertiary education to students in all state-owned universities and higher learning institutions starting from 2026.
This investment in human capital aligned with green and digital transformation initiatives is crucial for driving Sarawak’s economic progress in the years ahead, he said.
“That is why even an (former) opposition party returned (to GPS) and is now supporting the Gabungan Parti Sarawak government due to its confidence in the Sarawak government’s policies,” he added.
