MIRI: Efforts to deepen the access channel to the Miri Port Terminal at the Kuala Baram Delta, originally planned for completion in March 2027, are now projected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the project is currently 3.5 per cent ahead of schedule, with around 300 metres of breakwater already completed, demonstrating steady progress in dredging activities.

To further accelerate the construction of the RM208.9 million development, he directed the contractors and consultants to revisit their work schedules.

“The project also includes the construction of two six-kilometre breakwaters in waters deeper than 25 metres, which will position Kuala Baram as a strategic location for future deep-sea port development.

“With a deeper access channel, Miri Port is expected to handle up to 3.5 million tons of cargo annually, improving transportation efficiency and creating more job opportunities,” he said when visiting the site project on Sunday (Dec 8).

Uggah was accompanied by the ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Chiew Chee Yaw, and Miri Port Authority general manager Sarawa Budol.

This enhancement is vital to address previous challenges caused by the shallow channel, which compromised navigation safety and slowed industrial growth in the Kuala Baram Industrial Estate and the broader northern Sarawak region.
