MIRI: Officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) have inspected 51,261 premises between Jan 1 and Aug 9 in Sarawak.

These inspections resulted in 178 cases, leading to the issuance of RM 214,750 in fines and the seizure of goods valued at approximately RM17.56 million, according to Sarawak KPDN Director Matthew Dominic Barin.

Speaking at the launch of the Maggi cooking contest, “Jom Masak & Menang Bersama,” held at E-Mart Riam today, he stressed the ministry’s ongoing efforts to manage the rising cost of living.

He highlighted that one of the key strategies for 2024 would be the continued implementation of the “Payung Rahmah” initiative.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on the public by expanding the Ihsan Rahmah programme through greater collaboration with private industries.

Also present at the event was Business Executive Officer for Food-MAGGI, Nestlé Malaysia, Ivy Tan.

Matthew also introduced KPDN’s digital initiative, the Price Catcher application, designed to assist consumers in monitoring and comparing prices of goods across different premises.

The app not only aids consumers in planning their spending but also promotes ethical pricing among traders.

In addition to these measures, Matthew stressed the importance of enforcement in safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring protection against fraudulent and unethical practices in the marketplace.
