KUCHING: A total of 45 underprivileged families benefited from a special food assistance programme in Kota Sentosa, including 15 from Kampung Batu Perak and 30 from Kampung Stutong Baru Melayu.
‘Program Bantuan Bakul Makanan Sempena Hari Raya Aidilfitri’ was jointly organised by the Kota Sentosa Service Centre and Farley Supermarket, which served as the venue sponsor.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin emphasised that the programme was more than just about food aid.
It was about fostering community spirit and ensuring no one was left behind during festive celebrations.
“Hari Raya is a time for gratitude and unity. It reminds us of the importance of compassion and shared blessings.
“The food baskets we distribute today symbolise our commitment to supporting those in need, ensuring that every family can enjoy a meaningful celebration,” he said.
Each family received a food basket worth RM100, containing fresh chicken, potatoes, sweet cabbage, chicken curry paste, carrots, orange juice cordial, santan, cookies, kuih lapis, and a variety of festive nuts.
Unlike conventional food aid, which typically includes rice, cooking oil and dry goods, this programme focused on fresh ingredients to enable families to prepare a full meal for Hari Raya.
“We want to ensure that no family has to go through a festive season without a proper meal.
“It’s about dignity and joy, being able to sit down with loved ones and share a special dinner,” Yap explained.
He also noted that this initiative was not a one-time effort.
Similar programmes had been conducted for Chinese New Year and would be repeated for Gawai, ensuring that families in need receive support throughout the year.
“While today’s contribution is small, it reflects my ongoing commitment to supporting families on their journey towards economic stability.
“The GPS-led Sarawak government is investing in long-term solutions – affordable housing, job creation, and accessible healthcare – to uplift communities and ensure no one is left behind,” he stated.
He encouraged continued community solidarity, saying, “As Anak Sarawak, we must support one another and build a future where everyone benefits from the state’s progress”.
