KUCHING: A milestone was reached by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) in fostering international cooperation, today (Dec 11).

It signed a Letter of Intent for Friendship City Cooperation with Jinning District in Kunming,China, its first such undertaking abroad.

The signing ceremony, held in Jinning, saw MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos, representing Kota Samarahan, while Vice Mayor of Jinning District Yang Huirong, signed on behalf of Jinning.

The agreement marks Kota Samarahan’s first formal international partnership and sets the foundation for collaboration across key sectors, including economy, trade, culture, youth, education, science and technology, and tourism.

Minos highlighted the significance of the partnership in boosting Kota Samarahan’s development and aims to leverage the strengths of both regions to foster mutual growth and understanding.

“Through this partnership with Jinning District, we aim to boost the development of Kota Samarahan by sharing knowledge, expertise, and opportunities.

“This cooperation is a meaningful step towards enhancing our economic, science and technology, education, cultural and tourism connections with China,” he said.

Jinning District, known as the Hometown of Flowers, is celebrated for its global leadership in the floriculture industry, with the largest output of fresh-cut flowers in China.

The district, located around Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is also steeped in history as the hometown of legendary Admiral Zheng He.

The Kota Samarahan delegation included Deputy Chairman Haji Abdul Muttalib bin Julaihi, Council members Dr Florince Christy, Sarkawi bin Suhaili, Aziz bin Mohammad, and Salem bin Benga, along with Municipal Secretary Mr Gustian bin Durani and Deputy Municipal Secretary Lilian Liew.
