KUCHING: The amendments to the Sarawak Building Ordinance (SBO) 1994, scheduled to be tabled at this year’s State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting, will include the latest guidelines on the Green Building Index (GBI) and electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the significant amendments are important to ensure that new buildings comply with current safety standards and requirements.

As the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Dr Sim pointed out the existing ordinance is over 30 years old since its introduction is no longer relevant to today’s technological developments.

“All new regulations from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will be incorporated into our Building Ordinance.

“This is so that all new buildings and each of them will have to comply with the amendments in the Ordinance,” he said after officiating the Chinese New Year Fire Safety Campaign at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya today (Jan 21).

When asked when the amendment will be tabled, he stated it will be either in May or November, according to the Sarawak State Attorney-General (SAG).

Sim further explained that the ordinance contains guidelines specifically addressing electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, a pressing concern for condominium residents.

“Most condominiums want to provide EV charging facilities, but who will bear the cost? Therefore, through this amendment, we will provide much clearer guidelines,” he said.

Additionally, fire safety aspects are a main focus in this amendment as all safety features proposed by Bomba will be included in the ordinance.

He stated that building owners will be given a certain period to comply with these new regulations.

“If you look at the old buildings, they may have historical value, but if you are not keeping up with the safety measures, you are not doing that building justice as it may burn down completely.

“Just because it is a historical building does not make it acceptable or excusable. If you think about it, the small amount of money you spend saves your house or buildings.

“It may even save your life because your funeral will cost more than that. Think about it,” he said.
