KAPIT: Kapit District Council, in collaboration with ACG Green Tech Sdn Bhd, held an awareness talk on biodegradable plastic bags and an environmental friendly product called ‘Serai Wangi’ at Dewan Masyarakat Melayu, Kampung Muhibbah here yesterday morning. It was conducted by Christina Nawi of ACG Green Tech and among those who attending the talk were operators of food premises, retailers and hawkers.

Kapit District Council (KDC) Walikota Councillor Philimon Nuing officiated at the talk on behalf of Bukit Goram Assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat. Philimon pointed that the talk was the council’s initiative to promote a clean and safe environment, at the same time to heed the government’s call on the proposed ban on the usage of plastic bags and styrofoam.

“The counci l had al ready embarked on an environmental awareness programme under its ‘Go Rural Policy’ in 1996.

“This talk is our continuous effort to create awareness among the people on the importance of protecting and preserving the environment. “We had also initiated the recycling campaign through 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) projects involving twinning programmes with several primary schools in Kapit district namely SK Kampung Baru, SK Methodist, SJK Hock Lam and St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church,” he said.

Philimon commended ACG Green Tech Sdn Bhd, a Sibu based environmental friendly firm for taking the initiative to organise the talk as well as to introduce the new environmental friendly biodegradable product. “I am glad ACG Green Tech has come up with the biodegradable plastic bag as an alternative that will rot with time.

This can help reduce pollution of the environment apart from being cost effective,” he said.

Among those present were the KDC Deputy Walikota Councillor Lawrence Listin Baling, Bukit Mabong Sarawak Administrative Of f icer Calvin Ligong, ACG Green Tech di rector Chelok Anak Empajang, its sales manager Albert Bigam, branch manager Bibyana Anak Chelok and Assistant Environmental Health Officer Favian Masing, who is also the programme coordinator.
