ASAJAYA: KBSB1 stamped their name in local football history after clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tarang FC to win their first-ever Asajaya Unity Cup title.
It was a thrilling finale to Sarawak’s oldest football tournament.
The 57th edition of the prestigious championship, held at Kampung Sambir today, drew a lively crowd.
Fans turned up in full force to witness a clash between two of the tournament’s finest.
Out of 50 competing teams in the open category, it was KBSB1 and Tarang FC who earned their place in the final.
The match was graced by Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and KBSB patron, Datuk Abdullah Julaihi.
The showdown featured a host of familiar names, with Tarang FC fielding ex-Sarawak stars, Paul Sabang and Mohd Hadra Bakri, while KBSB1 were led by the dynamic Chuchu brothers – former national player Ashri and Azman.
The first half was a tense affair, with both sides pushing forward with intensity.
Tarang FC came close on multiple occasions, only to be denied by a resilient KBSB1 goalkeeper, who pulled off a series of fine saves.
The breakthrough came in the 27th minute, when Azam Nasrullah rose highest from a corner to nod home a powerful header, sending the KBSB1 fans into a frenzy.
KBSB1 continued to threaten in the second half, but a few promising headers veered just wide of the target.
Meanwhile, Tarang FC threw everything forward in the dying minutes, launching long-range efforts in search of an equaliser, but the KBSB1 defence held firm.
As the final whistle blew, jubilation erupted on the pitch, with fans storming the field to celebrate their team’s historic maiden triumph.
