KUCHING: Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman wants road improvements in Kampung Gita to be expedited following delays in a sewerage project there.

He said the project has caused significant inconvenience to residents, particularly in areas where excavation has disrupted road access.

He explained that Phase 2, a major sewerage project, extends into Kampung Gita, utilising the village’s main road and primary alleys.

“The project has been underway for quite some time, and it has caused difficulties for the residents.

“I have consistently worked with our Petra Jaya MP, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and have regularly engaged with the Sewerage Department, urging them to expedite the project.

“However, due to several difficulties encountered, the work has been dragging on a bit, causing problems for Kampung Gita residents in terms of road access,” he said during a visit to the road resurfacing project, followed by an inspection of the sewerage works at Lorong Kenanga 6, Jalan Pinang Jawa today (Mar 18).

He also addressed concerns over the deteriorating road conditions left by excavation works.

“I discussed this with the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman and have urged them to improve the roads in Kampung Gita.

“The Sewerage Department has completed its work in certain areas and handed over responsibility to
DBKU for paving,” he said, adding that DBKU has since begun paving roads that are free from further excavation by the department.

“But some roads remain incomplete as additional underground work is still required to connect individual houses to the main sewerage system,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said that paving work will be completed once all underground connections are finalised to prevent unnecessary re-excavation.

“If we pave these roads now, then after Hari Raya celebration, they might have to be dug up again to connect to the houses, which would be a waste.

“Thus, we are holding off on paving for the time being,” he added.

Fazzrudin also urged the Sewerage Department to improve road safety during the construction period.

“Several problematic sections remain incomplete, including stretches in front of Masjid Pinang Jawa, Shell, and Gita Laut due to underground work complications.

“From Gita Laut to Melati, and from Semarak to the mosque, issues persist. These must be resolved before full paving can proceed,” he said.

He said that while the sewerage project has impacted road conditions, it is part of a broader effort to modernise wastewater management by replacing individual septic tanks with a centralised sewage system that channels wastewater directly to Bintawa.
