SARIKEI: A total of 20 longhouses came together to celebrate Christmas and New Year 2025, an event organised by the Sarikei District Council in a joyous and harmonious atmosphere.

The celebration served as a platform for the local community to gather and enjoy the New Year’s Eve festivities. Longhouse residents took the opportunity to assemble at their respective longhouses, eagerly awaiting the countdown and a dazzling fireworks display.

The event was graced by Kapitan Ling Dien Yong, representing Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also Member of Parliament for Sarikei, and assemblyman for Repok.

In a speech delivered by Ling, Huang conveyed a message of unity and hope that this celebration not only united the community in a joyful atmosphere but also reminded them of the importance of unity and harmony in a diverse society as they face new challenges.

“Happy New Year 2025. May this year be filled with love, success, and happiness for all,” he said.

The Leisure with Leaders and the People programme commenced at 2 pm and continued until midnight, involving visits to 20 longhouses, comprising Pitre Ambit Tayup, Bansa Nanggal, Sabah Sawong, Rampai Timbang, Clement Asuh, Limbang Maleng, Jawi Singki, Anthony Suding, Antam Ali, Tayan Gundi, Mawas Timbu, Musit Merun, Mariam Jilan, Rampoo Paing, Setia Ungok, Keli Angai, Endawi Mula, Alen Jaro, Robert Igo, and the community hall at Jalan Langsat.

The event was also attended by Councillor Wong Zee Yeng, chairman of the Sarikei District Council, along with other officials from the council, further enlivening the celebration.

The longhouse residents expressed their gratitude for this initiative, which not only strengthened bonds within the community but also fostered closer relationships with local leaders.

This celebration marks a positive start to 2025, bringing a spirit of unity and joy to people from all walks of life.
