SARIKEI: Residents of Kampung Jerijih involved in the Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) have been urged not to sell their land lots to ensure long-term benefits, including the chance to own homes.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the Sarawak government has allocated RM24 million to implement the SPK project involving 231 land lots and is currently underway.
“In this initial phase, the work is focused on land reclamation and the provision of basic infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems.
“After completion, we are also working to obtain housing projects for those who qualify,” he said when speaking at the Kuala Rajang Aidilfitri celebration at the Kampung Jerijih Community Hall, last Friday (Apr 4).
He also stressed that the land provided is the result of a large government investment for the well-being of the people, therefore the people need to appreciate it and not sell it solely for short-term profit.
“RM1.2 million was also approved under the Kuala Rajang Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project to build a new hall to replace the old, dilapidated hall.
“All these facilities are not only for today’s use, but for the benefit of future generations,” he added.
Len also said that there are several upcoming projects that will boost the development of the surrounding area such as the expansion of Tanjung Manis Airport, the construction of hotels and golf courses in an effort to boost the tourism sector.
He is also confident that the opening of the Batang Rajang Bridge will attract more investments to this area and open up more job opportunities for locals.
