KUCHING: Department of Information (JAPEN) Sarawak staff have been urged to uphold the department’s prominent and relevant role in Malaysia’s communication landscape by embracing the challenges of the digital era.
Its director Helmy Hamid stressed that every challenge brings valuable lessons and opportunities for growth.
“JAPEN Sarawak is a legendary entity in the communication industry and must remain relevant amidst the evolving digital landscape. We are proud to be among the best in the country’s communication and media sector,” he said at the JAPEN Sarawak Retreat Programme held at the FINAS Auditorium on Tuesday (Jan 21).
As part of its proactive measures, Helmy said his department will introduce four new programmes in 2025 to enhance its role in strategic communication and digital content.
These programmes include Basic Information Academy (ASAS), which is a platform for developing essential communication skills; Pentarama homecoming – a revitalised cultural programme; Brek JNews, a new segment focused on fresh news delivery; and JAPEN On Mobile (JOM), a mobile application to expand outreach.
The existing Info On Wheels (IOW) programme will be revamped to include short talks by district information officers (PPDs), aimed at improving public speaking skills and boosting the effectiveness of information dissemination.
“This activity must be conducted at least twice a month by all PPDs to cultivate competent speakers and enhance JAPEN’s communication efforts,” Helmy added.
He also highlighted the importance of strategic collaboration with the Madani community and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) through the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).
These efforts include visits to NADI and registering Madani community committee members as NADI members.
Helmy announced that JAPEN’s key performance indicators (KPIs) for 2025 would be more structured, encompassing three levels: Putrajaya headquarters, state, and district.
“In addition to rolling out new programmes, JAPEN will maintain strong partnerships with strategic collaborators, particularly for initiatives involving the Sarawak government. JAPEN Sarawak must continue to affirm its essential role as a service provider to the people and the government,” he added.
Helmy also reminded staff of the importance of a positive work culture and professional courtesy, noting that the success of public servants hinges on their performance and discipline, particularly in light of the announced salary increments and special financial assistance under Budget 2025.
“I urge all JAPEN Sarawak staff to enhance their skills and value for the benefit of the community. Let us remain committed to ensuring that JAPEN’s programmes and services leave a meaningful impact on the people and the nation,” he said.
