TOKYO: HighChem Company Limited, a leader in sustainable technology innovation, has expressed its strong interest in collaborating with Sarawak to advance green technology.

In a recent statement, HighChem President Ushio Taka said the company was excited about Sarawak’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions.

He added that the company was keen to work together to harness HighChem President Ushio Taka, particularly hydroelectric power, to support industrial growth.

The proposal was made during a high-level meeting on December 17, which took place during the visit of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to Japan.

The discussions centred on potential collaboration in green technology, in line with Sarawak’s goal to become a global leader in a circular green economy.

Taka noted that combining HighChem’s advanced technologies with Sarawak’s abundant renewable energy resources could help establish the state as a global leader in the green industry.

During the meeting, HighChem introduced two pioneering technologies: Syngas to Ethylene Glycol (SEG) and CO2 to Paraxylene (PX). SEG technology converts syngas into ethylene glycol, a key component in polyester production, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.25 million tons annually.

The PX technology, developed with support from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO), successfully converts CO2 into paraxylene, a material used in manufacturing the national team’s uniforms for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

HighChem proposed Sarawak as an ideal location for large-scale pilot testing of the PX technology, in line with the region’s green initiatives.

The collaboration aims to convert CO2 emissions into valuable products, contributing to sustainability goals.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties assuring that the collaboration could lead to the development of world-class green polyester products produced entirely in Sarawak, setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the region.
