SIBU: Stretches of road at Jalan Maling will be upgraded under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) with a total cost of RM478,000.

According to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, the project will include clearing the drain as well as raising the road and tar seal.

“As you know Jalan Maling is a private road so that is why it is very difficult for Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to attend to.

“So that is why I am using my RTP fund for the upgrading work. The total lane for this road is four lanes and the total length is 1,118 metres with a width of 4.5 metres,” he said when met by reporters during the project handing over to SMC as the implementing agency on Wednesday (Sept 21).

Chieng noted that the upgrading work is expected to be completed in six months however he hoped that it would be completed earlier than scheduled.

“I hope that it can finish earlier before the rainy season so that the residents here won’t suffer that much, especially during the end of the year,” he said.

Chieng also noted that the upgrading of the road is crucial as it is the only road that is accessible by residents of the 48 houses in the area.

“During the rainy season, this (Jalan Maling) is a low-lying area hence usually flash floods happen (water level) at least three feet which is very high.

“So, it is very inconvenient for the people here. That is why there is a need for the upgrading work to be done,” he stressed.
