KUCHING: Elected representatives should adopt a proactive approach in addressing public issues instead of wasting time making empty, friendly statements.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap pointed out that issuing statements alone will not solve problems, but will instead leave public issues unresolved and delayed for years.
“As an elected representative, we cannot simply go to the ground and say, ‘I sympathise with your flooding issues.’ That is not the kind of answer an elected representative should give.
“A representative must thoroughly understand the problems and find solutions to resolve them promptly.
“For instance, in the case of flooding in Kampung Burung Lilin, there is no need to go there, take pictures, pose like an actor, and release statements, only for nothing to happen even after 15 years.
“That is not what Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants. He expects us (elected representatives) to be proactive and seek solutions,” he said.
Yap was speaking to reporters during the Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with Chinese New Year at the Shell petrol station at Mile 4 1/2 on Saturday (Jan 18).
Yap emphasised that Abang Johari’s directive for elected representatives to frequently visit their constituencies and find immediate solutions serves as a guiding principle in addressing issues in their respective areas.
“The Premier has also directed that allocations under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) and Rural Transformation Progtamme (RTP) be used to resolve public issues effectively, and as elected representatives, we must utilise these funds wisely.
“Unlike certain leaders in Peninsular Malaysia who tend to sideline problems, the Premier insists on addressing issues directly—that’s his approach, and we follow it,” he added.
Yap won the Kota Sentosa seat during the 12th Sarawak State Election (PRN), reclaiming the DAP stronghold after three terms.
Kota Sentosa was previously held by Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen for 15 years.
