KUCHING: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has lauded the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) for its outstanding facilities and steadfast commitment to fostering junior tennis talents.

ITF representative Catherine Michies, expressing her enthusiasm at returning to the city, praised the advancements in local tennis infrastructure.

“It is wonderful to be back in Kuching after so many years. The warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, and the delightful cuisine make this experience truly special.

“I am looking forward to an exciting week ahead,” Michies remarked during a press conference at the SLTA Centre on Wednesday.

She highlighted the significance of the Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying Tournament for the ITF World Junior Tennis Under-14 Girls competition, featuring 16 nations.

This prestigious event serves as a pivotal platform for emerging young players and marks a crucial milestone in their tennis careers.

Michies also acknowledged the remarkable improvements at the SLTA centre, particularly the high-quality courts and newly installed floodlights.

“The facilities are truly impressive. The transformation since my last visit is commendable,” she added.

Meanwhile, SLTA president Datuk Patrick Liew expressed his gratitude for ITF’s unwavering support and recognition.

He credited the ITF facility grant of USD 51,200 (about RM227,955) for significantly enhancing Kuching’s tennis infrastructure.

“This grant has enabled us to upgrade our facilities, ensuring readiness for SUKMA and other major events this year. Sarawak takes pride in being the first state in Malaysia to receive this approval,” said Liew.

The ITF’s endorsement of SLTA’s efforts reinforces Kuching’s position as a pivotal hub for junior tennis in the Asia-Oceania region.

Liew aspires for the hosting of international junior tournaments to ignite greater interest among young Malaysians, encouraging them to take up the sport and contribute to its growth on a national level.

“With parents and children witnessing the remarkable talent on display, we hope to inspire greater participation in tennis and further elevate its popularity,” he added.
