KUCHING: Heavy rain Monday night failed to dampen the spirit of thousands who thronged the Kuching Waterfront to usher in the New Year.
The celebration also saw the launch of Visit Sarawak Campaign “More to Discover” by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
At the stroke of midnight, the crowd cheered loudly to welcome the New Year amidst the sight and sounds of fireworks and lights displays, and dance and songs by local and national artistes.
Earlier in his speech, Johari said Sarawak would set up its own trade office in Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia’s Pontianak to promote the state.
“We are currently working to enhance connectivity between Sarawak and other destinations as well as upgrade facilities such as museums and national parks,” he stressed.
Among those present at the celebration were Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, former deputy chief ministers Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
