KUCHING: All gas companies in Sarawak have been given until 2026 to obtain their ISO 29001:2020 certification.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said by that time it would be mandatory for companies to include this certification when renewing their licence.
He said the certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to implementing best practices, ensuring product and service quality, and managinng risk effectively.
“This is the international level requirement, so we should be keeping abreast with the latest rules and regulation so that we will be globally recognised in the near future, especially within our workforce.
“That is why we are giving them the grace period until 2026. They (gas players) must include the certificate when they submit the application/renewal to our ministry,” he said.
He said this to reporters after launching a seminar on Raising Awareness for Achieving ISO29001: 2020, A Quality Management System for the Petroleum, Petrochemical and Natural Gas Industries here on Monday (Sept 23).
Earlier in his speech, Julaihi stated the measure underscores the state government’s commitment to promote excellence, safety, and sustainability within the gas sector, thus serving as a clear signal that adherence to international standards is non-negotiable for all industry participants.
“Thus I urge gas players in Sarawak to proactively obtain their ISO 29001 certification as part of their commitment to operational excellence and industry best practices,” he added.
On the seminar, he hoped it will serve as a catalyst for other initiatives, including improving the state’s labour market and producing a more qualified workforce.
“This is a major agenda concern within the ministry, especially with regard to making sure that everyone has access to affordable, high-quality, and dependable utilities by 2030.
“In aligning with the ministry’s directive and obtaining ISO29001 certification, gas players in Sarawak will not only fulfil regulatory requirements but also position themselves as industry leaders committed to excellence and continuous improvement,” he said.
Also present during the launching were Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability MInister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni and chief executive officer of SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd Fadhilah Muhammad.
