KUCHING: Thorough investigation into the rape incident at the Miri police station lock-up is expected to be completed this week, says Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail.
A female detainee claimed that she was raped by a male detainee in the police station’s toilet. Two policemen on duty on the night of the incident have been suspended pending investigation.
Aidi added that the case was still under investigation by Sarawak Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) and Miri JIPS.
“Investigation will finish within this week and we are identifying whether there is any weakness that resulted in such case.
“I have already instructed my deputy Datuk Fisol Salleh to coordinate the investigation and it will be completed as promised,” he told reporters at the Senior Police Officers Mess of the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK).
When asked whether the closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the lock-up was functional, Aidi said the CCTV was said to be not recording and the investigating team will gather all information from all aspects such as CCTV, lock-up rules, officers’ tasks and others.
He pointed out that the incident happened in the toilet where there was no CCTV.
“However, I will make sure the matter is further investigated and recorded statements from witnesses have also helped us to identify that the incident took place in the lock-up.”
The incident happened on Jan 9 when the 16-year-old victim was in custody for alleged involvement in illegal online gambling activities.
