KUCHING: An investigation into the sinkhole reported on Jalan Tun Jugah has found it to be relatively shallow, measuring approximately 1.3m by 1.7m with a depth of 0.75m.
In his statement after attended a briefing regarding the matter, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said during a visual inspection, the Public Works Department (JKR) noted that the surrounding road base material appeared loose and moist.
“Investigators identified an underground drainage system beneath the footpath adjacent to the sinkhole, with a manhole cover located approximately 2m from the site.
“Initial findings suggest that the sinkhole may have been caused by a leak from a rainwater downpipe connected to the shopping complex car park,” he said.
In response towards the sinkhole incident, Uggah stated that he has mandated the formation of an investigatioin committee comprising senior officials from JKR to conduct a thorough examination and assess the potential for additional sinkhole occurrences in the vicinity.
“The investigation committee, through JKR Sarawak’s Research Centre, will employ Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) technology to conduct a detailed investigation and ensure there are no additional sinkholes beneath the roadway.
“This comprehensive analysis is scheduled to be completed by Nov 15,” he added.
On Wednesday (Oct 30), a sinkhole was reported on Jalan Tun Jugah, prompting immediate action from local authorties.
Uggah has directed JKR to investigate the incident and backfill the sinkhole with appropriate materials to restore the surface and mitigate risks to road users.
The surface repair was completed within the few hours following the report.
