KUCHING: This year’s International Museum Day Festival will be hosted by Penang from May 12 to 22.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event will feature 28 local and international museum institutions comprising over 1,000 museum bodies.
“In Malaysia, the celebration is managed by Department of Museums Malaysia, and celebrated with 14 state museum corporation as well as affiliated institutions under the Association of Museums of Malaysia,” he said.
He told a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex yesterday.
Abdul Karim added there were various activities planned for the festival including booth exhibition, sports tournament, workshop, cultural performances and many more.
“For sports tournament, there are nine types of sports that will be contested from May 13 to 14,” he said.
Sarawak Museum Department will be sending a contingent comprising 35 members to compete in this festival.
He reiterated that the objective of this festival was to raise awareness to the public on the importance of the functions and role of the museum as an institution.
“Sports is not just to compete but also to strengthen the bonds between the museums personnel,” he stated.
