KUCHING: A call to action is extended to women and the Chinese community to consider joining the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

This message was the key message delivered by Constable Lai Xii Yuan, who completed the Basic Police Constable Training Programme (PLAK) at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) in Kuching today (Sept 9).

The 23-year-old woman from Batu 10 Kota Padawan was awarded the Overall Best Female Trainee for PLAK Bil.59 Series 1/2023.

Lai highlighted the relatively low representation of women and members of the Chinese community in PDRM, and she hopes to inspire others to join the force.

“The Chinese community is underrepresented in the PDRM, so I aim to serve as a positive example. I want to encourage more individuals from the Chinese community to consider a career with the PDRM,” she said in an interview at PULAPOL Kuching today.

She emphasised that those interested in joining the PDRM should not be discouraged by the six-month training duration. Instead, she advised them to persevere and complete the training, stressing the crucial role of family and friends as a source of motivation.

“Throughout those six months, I experienced both joy and hardship. There were mental challenges, and I even fainted a few times, but I used these setbacks as motivation. I completed the training not just for myself but also for my family and friends,” she shared.

When asked why she chose a career in the police force, she revealed that it had been her childhood aspiration.

“As a child, I once told my teacher that I wanted to become a police officer, and they laughed at me. However, I have now proven that my choice was the correct one,” she said.

Lai is presently pursuing a management degree at a private university and has aspirations to continue her studies for a bachelor’s degree. She harbours the dream of becoming a police officer in the future.

Lai is among the 495 trainees, including 248 men and 247 women, who successfully completed their training on this occasion.

The Completion Parade was presided over by Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.
