MIRI: Inner Wheel District 331 celebrated its 13th annual general meeting (AGM) over the weekend, blending formal proceedings, heartfelt speeches and cultural festivities.
Hosted by the Inner Wheel Club (IWC) Miri, the event was held at a hotel here and brought together delegates from across the district.
“As we transition into the next centennial celebration in May 2024, it has been particularly special to lead the district during this landmark year,” said district chairman (DC) Cecilia Amid.
Reflecting on the district’s progress, she noted key achievements, including the expansion of clubs, successful initiatives such as the “Orange the World” campaign and strengthened collaboration across leadership levels.
“Our growth is not the work of one individual but the result of teamwork, vision and determination.”
Cecilia also commended the dedication of member clubs and committees, noting that District 331 now comprises six active clubs: IWC Kota Kinabalu, IWC Sandakan and IWC Freesia Rose in Sabah as well as IWC Kuching, IWC Sibu and IWC Miri in Sarawak.
A total of 25 voting delegates and observers, representing all clubs except Sandakan, attended the AGM on March 22.
One of the key motions passed was the implementation of a rotation system for hosting future AGMs among all member clubs.
The proposal, designed to foster greater inclusion and participation, was approved with 18 votes in favour and two against.
“This motion represents a spirit of opportunity and fairness,” Cecilia said, calling it a new chapter of shared responsibility among the clubs.
The meeting also saw the election of the District Executive Committee (DEXCO) for the 2025–2026 term, which will take office from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.
The newly elected leadership includes district chairman Jane Lian Labang (succeeding Cecilia Amid), vice district chairman Emmeline Tan (IWC Kota Kinabalu), district treasurer Cherylyn William (succeeding Rozinah @ Gina Yaakob), district secretary Gina Yaakob (succeeding Jacqueline Lian Labang), extension chairman Alice Lau (continuing her term), international service organiser Datin Rubina Pung (continuing her term) and district editor Cecilia Sman (continuing her term).
Upon completing her term, Cecilia will assume the role of immediate past district chairman while Rokiah Staun will take a one-year break from EXCO duties as per the district constitution.
In her address, national representative Shanti Menon commended District 331 for its resilience and dedication. “While District 331 may be small in number, you are big in heart.”
Shanti praised the district’s proactive engagement, including its visit to District 330 to meet International Inner Wheel president Mamta Gupta, describing it as a strong gesture of unity and purpose.
She also noted the district’s impactful campaigns, particularly in gender-based violence prevention and women’s health, including cervical cancer awareness.
“Your projects, particularly in gender-based violence prevention and women’s health, are commendable and inspiring.”
She further acknowledged the leadership of Cecilia and her team, applauding their dedication to impactful projects and transformative initiatives.
Shanti concluded with a call for continued growth, encouraging clubs to recruit younger members, expand their reach and embrace innovation.
“Let us continue to serve with compassion, courage, and joy. Together, we have made a meaningful difference and together, we will achieve even more.”
