KUCHING: A Indonesian teenager was fined RM1,000, in default three weeks’ jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here today for selling public lotteries without a licence.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali sentenced the 18-year-old who pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Open Gambling Act 1953.
According to the charges, he is accused of selling public lottery tickets without a licence in a yellow hut in front of a house located at Kampung Astana, around 5.30 pm on April 25.
Based on the facts of the case, the police raided the hut following a tipoff about illegal gambling activities.
The police arrested an Indonesian man with equipment suspected of being used to sell public lottery tickets without a licence.
Items belonging to the accused were also confiscated such as a mobile phone, a portable printer and cash amounting to RM19.
Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
