SRI AMAN: A 35-year-old Indonesian plantation worker was believed to have been hacked to death with a machete by a colleague in a fight at an oil palm plantation near Pantu here on Wednesday.

After receiving a report on the incident, Sri Aman District Police Chief, Superintendent Dennis Bunyam, said the police is tracking down the suspect to assist in the investigation into the case.

“The Criminal Investigation Division (BSJ) of the Sri Aman District Police Headquarters (IPD) is tracking down a suspect identified as Bakri Zaini, 45, also an Indonesian oil palm plantation worker.

“An investigation paper has been opened under Section 302/435 of the Penal Code.

“The public who have any information about the suspect are asked to immediately report to the Sri Aman Police Station at 083-322121 or contact the investigating officer of the case, namely District BSJ head, Assistant Superintendent Kalang Buda (019-3317785), or any nearby police station,” he said in a statement today.

Acording to Dennis, at about 4.30 pm on Wednesday, the Pantu Police Station received a complaint that Indonesian farm workers were fighting in a farm area in Pantu, and one of them was believed to be unconscious.

“Initial investigation at the scene found a man lying lifeless with wounds on his neck, right arm, right hand, right thigh and soles, suspected to have been cut with a sharp object believed to be a machete.

“However, the suspect is believed to have fled,” he said.

Before fleeing, Dennis said, the suspect set fire to the workers’ houses, destroying 12 units of farm worker houses.

“The motive for the incident is believed to have stemmed from personal problems, dissatisfaction between the suspect and the deceased,” he said.
