KUCHING: An Indonesian woman was fined RM10,000 in default three months’ jail by the Magistrate Court here today after she pleaded guilty to having dealt with a gaming machine in January.
The accused, Yohana , 23, from Singkawang, Indonesia entered the plea before Magistrate Syarifah Zaiton Anuar to a charge framed under Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The Section carries a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 for each gambling item seized, and jail of not more than five years, upon conviction.
According to the fact sheets, she dealt with the gambling machine using two television sets, 16 joysticks and five mobile phones.
She committed the offence at a restaurant in Jalan Batu Kawa at 11.22 am on January 22.
Based on the facts of the case, the police raided the premises where Yohana was attached to, on suspicion that gaming activities were being held there, and seized slot machines from her.
Further investigations of the premises found items said to be used for illegal gambling, such as two television sets, 16 joysticks, a top-up controller, a WiFi modem, five mobile phones and RM1,460 in cash which were all confiscated as case exhibits.
A gaming expert further confirmed that the top-up controller was a gaming machine that offered a bet. It is considered gambling because winning points could be redeemed with money at the end of the game.
Insp Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted the case, while Yohana was not represented by any counsel.
