KUCHING: Sarawak’s cultural identity should be emphasised in infrastructure development, including the proposed new international airport here.
The call comes from Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, who highlighted the importance of incorporating cultural elements to reflect the state’s uniqueness.
“I see destinations like Bali in Indonesia successfully highlighting their culture through infrastructure, especially at Bali Airport. Why can’t Sarawak do the same? I want visitors to feel they have arrived in Sarawak as soon as they land,” he said.
Snowdan was speaking at the Sarawak Dayak Iban Academy (Asadia) graduation dinner held at the Sarawak Church Association (ACS) Christian Ecumenical Worship Center on Saturday (Jan 18)
He stressed the importance of preserving Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage so that future generations can inherit it.
“Without culture, Sarawak will lose its identity. Our culture is our heritage and identity, and we must protect it for generations to come,” he added.
As a gesture of support, Snowdan announced a RM20,000 donation from his ministry to support Asadia’s activities.
He also conveyed a message from Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who pledged an additional RM30,000 contribution to the organisation.
Asadia’s chairman, Mabong Unggang, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from both leaders.
“Their dedication to Dayak cultural activities has been consistently demonstrated throughout the years,” he said.
During the event, 247 Asadia graduates received certificates in recognition of their participation in various cultural classes offered by the academy.
The graduates also showcased their skills through performances, reflecting their effective learning experiences.
The ceremony was graced by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, along with officials from the Sarawak Iban Dayak Association (Sadia) and the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU).
