KUCHING: The late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, fondly remembered as Tok Nan, remains a revered figure in Sarawak, cherished for his enduring legacy and impactful leadership even eight years after his passing.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, paid tribute to the former chief minister, reflecting on the immense void left by his untimely departure.
He described Tok Nan’s death on Jan 11, 2017 as a profound loss, particularly for those who had drawn inspiration from his visionary leadership.
“We still want more from you, Sir,” he said in a Facebook post, expressing the deep longing for the guidance and leadership Tok Nan had provided.
Dr Annuar, who serves as Nangka assemblyman, recalled Tok Nan’s significant role in Sarawak’s pursuit of its rightful place in the federation of Malaysia.
He praised the late leader for instilling in him and many others the determination to fight for the state’s rights, a mission that had been close to Tok Nan’s heart since the formation of Malaysia in 1963.
“In the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN), you stood beyond your towering figure to exuding a persona as my idol, mentor and respectful leader.
“You minted me as an eloquent orator I wanted to be and showed me the way in voicing the people’s need. You told us not to hesitate or fear speaking up for the rakyat because, like the rest, you were also elected by the people to be in the august House.
“Your wits and wisdom are fabulous and unsurpassable, sharp and hard-hitting,” he added.
He also reflected on his time with the ‘Adenan Team,’ a group led by Tok Nan, where he learned valuable lessons on leadership, responsibility, and unity.
“You prodded and cajoled us to work hard for the sake of Sarawak,” he said, expressing gratitude for Tok Nan’s enduring influence.
He said that while words of thanks could never fully express the debt owed to Tok Nan, his leadership would live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
“I shall cherish your charismatic and altruistic leadership and translate it to hard work in serving the people, the benefit of which will vibrate till the coming generations,” he vowed.
