KUCHING: The Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) recently held discussions with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) on the proposed implementation of geo-fencing for e-hailing vehicles at Kuching International Airport and Sibu Airport.

The initiative aims to improve traffic flow at arrival and departure areas, ensuring a smoother experience for travellers and transport service providers.

LPKP Sarawak chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian acknowledged the growing congestion at both airports, particularly at pick-up and drop-off zones.

The increased use of e-hailing services has led to unregulated pick-ups, contributing to bottlenecks.

Meanwhile, geo-fencing, which would designate specific waiting and pick-up areas for e-hailing vehicles, is expected to ease traffic congestion and enhance passenger convenience.

However, Kong also raised concerns about indiscriminate parking, where vehicles waiting for passengers often park illegally near terminals, thus worsening congestion.

He stressed that such practices create a poor first impression for tourists arriving in Sarawak. MAHB has recognised this as a longstanding issue and is committed to implementing measures to address it.

“Airports serve as the gateway to Sarawak, and it is our responsibility to ensure that travellers experience convenience, efficiency, and safety upon arrival,” Kong said.

LPKP Sarawak will continue working with MAHB, relevant authorities, and stakeholders to implement effective solutions that reduce congestion and improve the public transport ecosystem at the state’s key airports.
