MIRI: Contraband cigarettes worth millions of ringgit were seized from a lorry in a joint operation conducted by Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 along Miri Kuala Baram Bypass Road on Wednesday (July 5).
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said three persons were also arrested.
Total value of the smuggled cigarettes and the lorry was RM7.83 million.
In the operation codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’ which began at 9.40 pm, the team intercepted and inspected a lorry parked on the roadside at Miri Kuala Baram Bypass Road. Around seven million sticks of cigarettes suspected to be contraband were found in the vehicle.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
