BINTULU: Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM) Bintulu and Petronas are continuing to collaborate on providing technical training to meet increasing industrial demand here.

IKM Bintulu Director, Mohd Syukri Abdullah, said this year, IKM Bintulu has organised more than 50 technical programmes to train local youth and communities, aiming to equip them with relevant skills for the oil and gas sector.

He said these training programmes are conducted continuously, even during festive seasons, as the industry cannot afford to wait as it requires skilled workers urgently.

“Most of the programmes also come with job guarantees for participants, offering definite job opportunities for those who complete the training,” he said.

He said this at the Upskilling Programme for Scaffolding Level 1 graduation ceremony here on Wednesday.

Earlier, Sarawak Operations Head for Petronas’ Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP), Hazli Kipli, highlighted the success of the Upskilling 2024 programme, which provided training opportunities to 123 participants from Lawas to Bintulu.

According to him, the programme included various technical courses, such as Scaffolding Level 1 involving 33 participants, Oil and Gas Strategic Projects (OGSP) for 40 participants, as well as digital marketing and homestay courses engaging 50 participants.

He expressed hope that this initiative would help local youth improve their socio-economic status and contribute to Sarawak’s development.

“The Upskilling Programme provides direct exposure to industries that require skilled workers, particularly in the oil and gas sector, to support planned development projects.

“With more training opportunities available, this programme has a positive impact on participants, empowering them with relevant skills and opening job opportunities in key industries.

“Petronas SSGP hopes this effort can enhance the capacity of the local workforce and further strengthen economic development in Sarawak,” he stated.

A total of 23 graduates were celebrated at the graduation ceremony officiated by Jepak assemblyman, Iskandar Turkee.
