KUCHING: The appointment of Datuk Ibrahim Baki as Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Sarawak’s role as an energy supplier through the Borneo Power Grid initiative.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the appointment plays a crucial role in ensuring continued growth in the energy sector.

He said Sarawak will supply energy to Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and the ASEAN Power Grid, of which the Borneo Power Grid is one of the initiatives receiving attention from federal studies.

“With (Ibrahim’s) experience, insya-Allah, I think it will be easier for us to cooperate,” he said to reporters when met at the Matang Jaya Ramadan Bazaar today (March 17).

Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, said that this appointment has certainly been reviewed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“I believe it has certainly been reviewed by the Premier and has a solid foundation. I see that Ibrahim is not only a lawyer but has also worked with PETRONAS, sponsored by PETRONAS, and served on PETRONAS’ board. That’s why one of his portfolios is to manage energy affairs in Sarawak and also with Petros.

“Since he already knows what’s inside PETRONAS, it will be easier for him to possibly negotiate and connect with PETROS,” he said.
