SIBU: A former member of parliament has denied allegations of his involvement in a racket which recruited the 40 Sarawakians to work in Cambodia.
The Sarawakians were among 47 Malaysians who were released from Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison last Friday after being arrested in December last year.
Sng Chee Hua, an ex-MP of Julau and former Pelagus assemblyman, lodged a police report on Saturday morning at Ulu Lanang police station, here.
He urged police to investigate the source of the rumours and take action against those responsible for spreading the lies, saying that his reputation had been tarnished.
Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, who confirmed that Sng had lodged a police report, said the complainant, 71, denied a claim that had gone viral in social media alleging he was involved in the ring that supplied local labour to Cambodia.
“I had no choice but to lodge a police report to clear my name.
“My son Larry Sng (the Julau MP) told me that a posting in a WhatsApp group had claimed that I was responsible for sending the Sarawakians to work in Cambodia.
“The posting has gone viral,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
