MELAKA: A housing project for fishermen worth RM7.64 million in Kuala Sungai Baru, Alor Gajah, near here is expected to be completed this year, said Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari.
He said the project covering 5.6 hectares of land involved an allocation of RM6.04 million from the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry while the remaining RM1.6 million was allocated by the Melaka state government.
A total of 60 qualified fishermen in the area would have the opportunity to own the houses priced at RM45,000 a unit, he said.
“The fishermen housing project was abandoned more than a year ago before construction was revived and it is now almost 98 per cent complete.
“It will be fully completed soon…this year. The project will be equipped with various basic facilities including a community hall, surau, kindergarten, playground and futsal court,” he said in a press conference after the state executive council meeting here, today.
Adly said the house ownership appraisal process would be carried out by the Melaka state Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia to identify suitable candidates to own the houses.
Meanwhile, he said the state government would also focus on beautifying the scenery in the state by having mural paintings onto buildings especially in tourist spots such as Jonker Walk and along the Melaka River.
Adly said this was because mural artwork was one of the efforts to attract tourists to the state, although it must depict different themes or motives to ensure that they are not boring.
“We plan to change the mural themes once every six months or one year…however, it would depend on the current financial ability. We do not want to be bound with the current theme which is skewed towards old history,” he said. – Bernama
